Saharanpur (UP), Sep 30 (PTI) A 65-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl here after luring her with the promise of buying her toffees, police said on Wednesday.

According to the girl’s family, the girl was playing outside her house with other children in the neighbourhood around four days ago when the accused, who was sitting at a tea stall nearby, called her over and offered her Rs 10 to buy toffees. He then allegedly took her to an isolated place and raped her.

The girl returned home in a frightened state, following which her family questioned her and she narrated the incident, police said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police and Circle Officer (City-I) Sarika Chaudhary told PTI that the family subsequently took the girl to Qutub Sher police station and lodged a complaint.

Police counselled the girl and began an investigation based on the complaint, she said.

Police examined CCTV footage from the area to trace the accused, leading to his arrest, Chaudhary said, adding that further investigation is underway. PTI COR KIS ARB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
