New Delhi: Byju’s, one of India’s biggest edtech platforms, Thursday announced the launch of offline coaching classes for schoolchildren. The platform has operated exclusively online since its app was launched in 2015.

In a press release sent Thursday, the edtech giant said the offline classes would be available for pupils in classes 4 to 10. For now, there will be 500 offline coaching centres across 200 cities. The centres were launched after positive feedback on the first 80 centres, which were part of a pilot programme.

Speaking to ThePrint, a Byju’s spokesperson said the coaching — already up for enrolment — would be carried out in a hybrid mode, with pupils studying online and attending in-person classes a few times a week. “As of now, it’s only for mathematics and science subjects,” she said.

Only those who have enrolled for online classes will be able to attend the offline sessions there’s no stand-alone in-person coaching, she added.

The decision was made after thorough research, the spokesperson said, as many parents were found to be keen on offline learning.

The monthly fee for these packages with online and offline classes will range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500 per month. The other study packages, which are completely online, cost somewhere around Rs 15,000 annually. The price depends on the number of subjects a student takes up.

“The ‘Byju’s Tuition Centre’ is a ‘first-of-its-kind comprehensive programme’ to bring the best of both online and offline learning experiences,” the press release said, adding that the platform is aiming to enrol 10 lakh students in the programme in the next two years.

Offering ‘physical element’, ‘teacher-student personal connect’

As quoted in the press release, Mrinal Mohit, chief operating officer, Byju’s, said, “Byju’s Tuition Centres address the needs of a large segment of parents and students who want a physical element in addition to online teaching support.”

The Byju’s Tuition Centre offering has been designed to help students bridge gaps in their learning, strengthen conceptual understanding, and reinforce learning through regular practice and tests that ensure exam readiness, said the press release.

Students will have the same teacher for their offline and online classes who will support them with their “personalised learning journeys”.

Commenting on the launch, Himanshu Bajaj, head of Byju’s Tuition Centre, said, “It will offer students three things — a two-teacher model in tech-enabled physical centres, teacher-student personal connect supported by analytics-led assessment of progress and performance, and access to Byju’s online ecosystem.”

“By keeping students’ requirements at the core, we hope that this new offering will stand as an example and achieve scale, resulting in nurturing of future-ready students, and a forward-looking and unique academic environment,” he added.
