New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is unlikely to come up with a merit list this year, just like the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), which announced the results of Class 10 and 12 Friday without declaring a merit list.
“We are calculating results on the basis of an evaluation method. Coming up with a merit list makes no sense in such a situation,” a senior CBSE official told ThePrint.
The official added that the CBSE is evaluating students on the basis of exams they wrote before the Covid-19 lockdown.
In the wake of the pandemic, both CISCE and CBSE had to cancel some of their exams and decided to calculate results on the basis of an evaluation scheme.

No dates announced for results yet
The CBSE is yet to officially announce when it will declare the results. During the hearing of a petition in the Supreme Court in June to postpone exams, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of CBSE, had said results would be declared by 15 July.
In an affidavit before the top court, the CBSE had also elaborated its evaluation scheme, in which it divided students into four categories.
According to the evaluation formula, the four categories of students, which the board has identified for both Classes 10 and 12, include those who have completed all their exams and whose results will be declared based on their performance in the exams.
The second category is those students who have appeared in exams in more than three subjects, and the average of the marks obtained in the best three performing subjects will be awarded in the subjects whose examinations have not been conducted.
The other category of students that the board has identified is those who have appeared in only three subjects. For such students, the average of marks obtained in the best two performing subjects will be awarded in the subjects whose examinations have not been conducted.
Finally, there is a category of Class 12 students, mainly from the riot-affected Northeast Delhi region where exams had to be postponed. These students appeared in only one or two exams — their results will be declared based on performance in the appeared subjects and performance in internal/practicals project assessment.
