New Delhi, Apr 22 (PTI) The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) alleged that Delhi University’s Department of Commerce filled only one Scheduled Tribe (ST) seat in the first phase of PhD admissions for the 2025–26 academic session, despite notifying four seats.
According to Dhanraj Meena, a DUTA executive member, the department notified a total of four ST seats across PhD admission phases one and two for the academic session 2025-26.
“However, only one candidate was admitted in phase one, even though eligible candidates were available,” he said.
Sharing documents on social media, Meena questioned the justification cited by the department that no other candidates met the selection criteria and called it “deeply concerning” and indicative of a broader pattern.
He alleged that similar instances of candidates being marked “Not Found Suitable” (NFS) have also occurred in faculty recruitment.
“What we are witnessing is not an isolated incident but a recurring pattern where reserved seats are left unfilled, effectively denying opportunities to ST candidates,” he said.
Meena said such practices undermine principles of social justice and constitutional safeguards.
He argued that restricting PhD-level admissions has long-term implications for representation in academia because it affects the pipeline for future faculty positions.
The DUTA executive member urged the university authorities to take cognisance of the issue and ensure transparency and accountability in the admission process.
Other DUTA members also supported Meena’s social media post.
There was no immediate response from the department administration on the matter. PTI AHD ASD ASD
