New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) As some protesters demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation sought refuge in Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in central Delhi amid a police crackdown on demonstrators, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) accused AAP leaders of defaming the gurdwara after a few demonstrators allegedly raised slogans there.

DSGMC chief Harmeet Singh Kalka said protesters attempted to force their way into the hall of Gurdwara Bangla Sahib but were stopped by the staff. He alleged that they came inside the premises with placards and raised slogans as part of their protest.

“I am very surprised that the gurdwara, which is open for people from all walks of life and where everyone is served, is being used for protests,” Kalka said in a statement.

Showing videos purportedly of the incident, he questioned the criticism of police personnel who entered the premises to remove the protesters, arguing that the police had intervened after the demonstrators entered the gurdwara.

“If you send the protesters inside the gurdwara and the police come there to take them out, then apart from this, you tell me, what else do you want?” he said.

Kalka also criticised AAP legislators for questioning the presence of police inside the gurdwara premises, alleging that the party was attempting to turn the religious institution into a political arena.

He said the gurdwara welcomed people seeking food and shelter but would not tolerate its premises being used as a base for protests.

“It is our responsibility to maintain the dignity of the gurdwara,” he said, adding that political activity inside the premises would not be tolerated. PTI AHD AMJ

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
