Shimla, Apr 16 (PTI) Padma Shree awardee and global expert on rabies, Dr Omesh Bharti, has been nominated by the WHO as a member of the oversight committee of the Strategic Technical Advisory Group (STAG) working on monitoring, evaluation, and research in the WHO Malaria and NTD Department.
According to a communication from the World Health Organisation (WHO) Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Department, Dr Bharti has been included as an independent expert on neglected zoonotic diseases in the 18 member oversight committee for the Department’s mid-term evaluation.
The mid-term evaluation is focused on assessing the progress of the Neglected Tropical Diseases Road Map 2021-2030 and whether it is on track to deliver meaningful results by 2030.
The oversight committee will provide strategic and technical oversight to help ensure the evaluation process is credible, objective, and useful for programme improvement.
Dr Bharti, who is part of the National Task Force and WHO panels on rabies and snakebite envenoming, said India’s representation in the committee will give the country a say in decision making on the NTD roadmap.
Currently posted as Deputy Director with the National Health Mission in Shimla, he was awarded the Padma Shree in 2019 for developing a low-cost protocol for dog bite treatment to prevent rabies, which was adopted by WHO in its global guidelines in 2018. PTI BPL MDO MDO HIG HIG
