Bengaluru, Nov 4 (PTI) The documentary film, ‘Nilgiris–A Shared Wilderness’, directed by Sandesh Kadur, celebrates the story of India’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and was screened privately in Chennai on Monday, aligning with the International Day for Biosphere Reserves.

“This is a story that showcases nature’s resilience and adaptability—where else in the world can you find black leopards, gaurs, and sloth bears all living in a tea garden?” said Kadur, who also served as the film’s cinematographer.

Produced by Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and Felis Creations, an Indian production house specialising in wildlife and conservation films, the documentary aims to raise awareness about the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve and its harmonious relationship with people and nature, he added.

“With this film, we hope to awaken people to the incredible beauty and biodiversity of this ancient, unique biosphere—the largest protected forest area in the country, now facing rapid change due to human activity,” said Rohini Nilekani, chairperson of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and the film’s executive producer.

According to Nilekani, conserving this area requires cooperation among the community, government, and market. “The documentary is a call to action for everyone who feels connected to these sacred landscapes,” she added.

The release date was chosen to honour the communities and forest departments working tirelessly to preserve the Nilgiris, according to the team. PTI JR SSK KH
