New Delhi, Oct 5 (PTI) A 35-year-old man, who allegedly claimed to be a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and demanded Rs 25 lakh from a doctor, has been arrested from Delhi, police said on Monday.
The complainant, a senior doctor at a private hospital, received a threatening call on his mobile phone on October 2. The caller demanded Rs 25 lakh and claimed to have access to his personal details, including his car registration number and wife’s name, police said.
A case was registered at the Paschim Vihar East police station following the complaint. A joint team was formed with personnel from the police station and the Special Staff to nab the accused. The team used technical and human intelligence to trace the mobile number used for making the extortion calls.
The complainant was asked to remain in touch with the accused and record the conversations, following which the accused asked him to bring the extortion money near a hospital at Rohini on October 2, a police officer said.
Police laid a trap at the spot and apprehended the accused when he arrived to collect the money. He was identified as Himanshu Jain, a resident of Pooth Gram Sabha, the officer said.
A mobile phone and a SIM card allegedly used to make the extortion calls, along with the car allegedly used by Jain during the offence, were seized, police said.
During interrogation, Jain told police that he committed the offence to meet his financial needs. Police said Jain was previously involved in two cases, including one for extortion registered at the Subhash Place police station in 2018 and another lodged at the Preet Vihar police station in 2020. Further investigation is underway, police said. PTI BM RC
