Pune, Jun 20 (PTI) The mortal remains of Pune-based Irfan Shaikh, who was part of the crew on Air India flight 171 that crashed on June 12 in Ahmedabad, will be handed over soon after DNA samples matched, a kin said here on Friday.

The Air India Ahmedabad-London flight crashed moments after it took from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport at 1:39pm on June 12. It crashed into a medical college campus in Meghaninagar, killing 241 out of 242 persons onboard, as well as 29, including five MBBS students, on the ground.

“We have received confirmation from the authorities that DNA samples have matched. The blood samples of Irfan’s brother were collected for the process. We don’t know by when the body will be handed over to us. If we get the mortal remains by tonight, we will bring the body to Pune, after which last rites will be performed,” his uncle Firoz Shaikh told PTI.

The family lives in Pimpri Chinchwad here. Irfan’s father Salim Shaikh runs a shop, his mother is a homemaker and his elder brother works in a software firm, he said.

“Irfan’s father, brother and a friend are in Ahmedabad while his mother returned home a few days back. Irfan had joined the aviation industry as a cabin crew member two years ago after completing a course. He initially worked with Vistara, and after the Air India-Vistara merger, he began flying on international routes,” he said.

Irfan had big dreams and was determined to excel in the field, but all those dreams have been shattered, Firoz Shaikh rued.

Over a week after 270 people were killed in the Ahmedabad plane crash, 220 victims have been identified through DNA tests, and the mortal remains of 202 of them were handed over to their families, Rushikesh Patel, the health minister and the Gujarat government’s spokesperson, said on Friday.
