Indore, Oct 17 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Saturday questioned the Election Commission’s decision to conduct a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls, and demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the poll body’s functioning.

Speaking to reporters here, the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister also questioned the legal basis of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

“First, how did the Election Commission conduct the SIR in such an improper manner? Why was there a need for an SSR after that? Therefore, CEC Gyanesh Kumar should resign immediately,” Singh said.

He would embark on a ‘Satya Sanatan Swabhiman Yatra’ from Ujjain to Ayodhya on October 20, coinciding with Vijayadashami, he said, adding that the purpose of the march was to protest the alleged theft of donations and offerings at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Singh also demanded the immediate dissolution of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust which manages the temple, and registration of a case against the “real culprits”.

The management of the Ram temple should be handed over to the Ramalaya Trust, formed in 1994, and no political leaders be included in it, he said. PTI HWP LAL KRK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
