Chennai, Jul 26 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu government will launch a comprehensive three-day desilting and maintenance drive across major waterbodies in Chennai and its suburbs on Monday ahead of the monsoon.
Water Resources Minister N Anand will inaugurate the initiative and conduct field inspections across six key locations from July 27 to 29.
According to an official release, the Chennai region’s water network comprises 60 km of rivers, 54 km of canals, and 3,700 hectares of lakes, making systematic desilting essential. The state aims to complete these works prior to the monsoon season.
The drive will be executed by the Water Resources Department (WRD) with active participation from corporate entities offering their social contributions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and citizen volunteers.
The extensive network earmarked for maintenance includes the Cooum, Adyar, and Kosasthalaiyar rivers; Buckingham Canal and Okkiyam Maduvu drains; estuaries at Adyar, Cooum, and Muttukadu; and major lakes situated in Velachery, Puzhal, Narayanapuram, Adambakkam, and Kovilambakkam.
Detailing the itinerary, the Information and Public Relations Department stated that Minister Anand will commence the drive on Monday by inspecting the Cooum river stretch near Koyambedu and the Okkiyam Maduvu drain situated in Okkiyam Thoraipakkam village.
On Tuesday, the field study will cover the Adyar river area near Manapakkam and the South Buckingham Canal near the Sholinganallur Akkarai bridge.
The three-day drive will conclude on Wednesday with a review of desilting operations at the Velachery and Narayanapuram lakes.
Members of the Legislative Assembly, WRD Principal Secretary Satyabrata Sahoo, departmental engineers, corporate representatives, NGO members, and the general public will participate in the events, the release added. PTI JR KH
