New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) Delhi Police will initiate legal action over a video circulated on social media allegedly showing police personnel wearing shoes inside Gurdwara Bangla Sahib during a crackdown on protesters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, an official said on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma, in a post on the official police handle on X, said the personnel seen in the video were walking through a common passage used by devotees to reach the point where they remove their shoes before entering the gurdwara.

“The video has been circulated deliberately with malicious intent, to outrage the feelings of a respectable religious community and is prejudicial to the religious harmony,” Sharma said, adding that legal action was being initiated.

The video surfaced amid a controversy over police personnel entering the gurdwara premises as some protesters, facing police action during demonstrations against the CEC, sought refuge there.

The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) chief Harmeet Singh Kalka had accused Aam Aadmi Party leaders of politicising the issue and defaming the religious institution.

Kalka alleged that some protesters entered the gurdwara premises with placards and raised slogans as part of their demonstration. He said staff members stopped them from forcing their way into the hall.

Questioning the criticism of police personnel who entered the premises to remove the protesters, Kalka said the police had intervened after the demonstrators entered the gurdwara.

He said the gurdwara welcomed people from all walks of life and provided food and shelter, but its premises could not be used as a base for political protests.

Kalka also defended the need to maintain the dignity of the religious institution, alleging that AAP leaders were attempting to turn it into a political arena.

Delhi Police detained more than 7,000 protesters attempting to reach the Jantar Mantar during the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi on Saturday.

Police said permission for the protest had not been granted and prohibitory orders were in force in the New Delhi area. PTI SSJ

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
