Delhi Police personnel plan protest over transfer of two officers

New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) A section of Delhi Police personnel is planning to stage a protest outside the force’s headquarters on Monday morning against the transfer of two officers, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, following a standoff with lawyers over an alleged assault on an advocate, sources said.

The proposed protest comes amid efforts by senior police officers to prevent personnel from mobilising, with district deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) reportedly asked to keep a close watch on their staff and ensure that they do not participate in the demonstration.

The controversy stems from an October 23 incident at Shahdara police station, where advocate Lalit Bansal allegedly sustained a serious head injury during a scuffle. The incident was followed by a confrontation between lawyers and police personnel at the police station, triggering an indefinite strike by district court lawyers.

Delhi Police had on October 28 transferred ACP Manasvi Vashistha, who was posted as the sub-divisional police officer in Gandhi Nagar, to the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC). Inspector Arun Kumar, the then SHO of Shahdara police station, was transferred to the security unit.

The transfers came amid demands by lawyers for action against the police officers allegedly responsible for the assault on Bansal and the subsequent confrontation at the police station.

Meanwhile, the concerned ACP has reportedly proposed a dialogue with the Delhi Police Commissioner, suggesting that it be broadcast online so that personnel and the public can watch it.

The proposed protest reflects discontent among a section of police personnel over the transfers, even as efforts are being made to resolve the standoff between the police and the legal fraternity. PTI SSJ
