New Delhi: The Delhi Police has lodged an FIR against the protesters for violating law and order, a day after hundreds of people gathered at the India Gate to protest against the Supreme Court order on stray dogs.
According to sources, the First Information Report was lodged under Section 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by the public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
This comes in the backdrop of the top court’s order that stated that all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR region must be picked up and sent to shelters within eight weeks. It had noted that cases of dog bites and dog menace are increasing.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi government have been asked to ensure that all the stray dogs picked up are transferred to the animal shelters and not released on the roads again.
Animal lovers and rights activists as well as rescuers had protested at India Gate on Monday. However, police personnel detained and removed the protesters and stopped it mid-way. The protesters were put into vans and buses. There was heavy police deployment at Kartavya Path.
“The FIR has been lodged for the violation of law and order arrangements. Protesters were asked repeatedly to vacate the area. When police personnel tried to remove the protesters, some of them misbehaved and resisted. There were also instances of manhandling by the protesters,” a senior police officer told ThePrint.
