New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Thursday directed officials to strengthen monitoring of polluting industries, improve roads and stormwater drainage infrastructure in Rajasthan Udyog Nagar in Jahangirpuri, while calling for expansion of green cover in the Adarsh Nagar assembly constituency.
Sirsa held a meeting with Adarsh Nagar MLA Raj Kumar Bhatia to review industrial infrastructure, environmental protection, waste management and plantation plans in the constituency, according to an official statement.
Senior officials of the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), Forest Department and Food and Supplies Department, along with representatives associated with Rajasthan Udyog Nagar, attended the meeting.
Reviewing road and stormwater drainage works being executed by DSIIDC in the industrial area, Sirsa directed officials to ensure that the projects are durable and executed according to approved designs and technical standards.
“The objective should not merely be to complete the work, but to create infrastructure that remains durable and functional for years. Proper auditing at both the design and execution stages must be ensured,” he said.
The minister also directed officials to establish a regular mechanism for cleaning and maintaining storm-water drains.
He said wastewater discharged from industrial clusters should be properly regulated and connected to storm-water drainage systems only through scientifically designed arrangements, with chambers at inflow and outlet points to facilitate inspection and monitoring.
On pollution concerns, Sirsa directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and other departments to take strict action against industries violating environmental norms and against unscientific waste-treatment practices.
He specifically flagged the burning of wires, saying such practices could cause serious air pollution and environmental damage.
“Delhi’s industrial growth cannot come at the cost of the environment. Industries must follow prescribed environmental norms, and practices such as open burning of wires and other unscientific methods of waste disposal will not be tolerated,” Sirsa said.
“The DPCC must ensure effective monitoring and strict action wherever violations are found,” he added.
The minister also reviewed plans to expand green cover in the constituency. A joint survey of available green-belt areas will be carried out by the Forest Department and representatives of the local association, following which plantation drives will be planned at suitable locations, according to the statement.
Sirsa said development of industrial areas must go hand in hand with environmental improvement, better infrastructure and efficient public services.
