New Delhi: Delhi metro commuters were surprised to see a sudden rise in metro fares Monday. Via its social media handle this morning, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced the fare hike of up to Rs 4 across all route basis travel distance.
On an average, the fares have been hiked by 7.3 percent across all routes for weekdays and Saturdays.
For shorter routes of up to 2 km, the fare was hiked from Rs 10 to Rs 11 and Rs 20 to Rs 21 for travel distance between 2 km to 5 km. For distances ranging between 5 km to 12 km, the fare was hiked to Rs 32 from Rs 30 earlier, while for distances between 12 km to 21 km, it is now Rs 43 from earlier Rs 40.
The fares have also been hiked for Sunday and national holidays, whereby distances up to 5 km will now cost Rs 11 instead of Rs 10 earlier.
The passenger fares of the Delhi Metro services have been revised with effect from today, that is, 25th August 2025 (Monday) onwards. The increase is minimal, ranging from ₹ 1 to ₹ 4 only depending on the distance of travel (upto ₹5 for the Airport Express Line). The new fare… pic.twitter.com/gOgOGmebxz

This is the first DMRC rate revision in eight years, and aims to meet the rising operational costs.
However, daily commuters were not pleased with the rate revision without any prior information from the DMRC.
A user on X stated, “While the fare increase is very fair and its almost negligible. But shouldn’t you announce it in advance? Why do you invite unnecessary drama?? Rekha Gupta needs to learn how to run govt smoothly.”
While others pointed out that there was no committee or prior discussion on the hiking of fares. “Which committee was formed to increase the fare?”. another user asked.
But some did not have any issue with the hike as it has been done after eight years.
“This increase in fare is too low if we take into account inflation in last 8 years. I request DMRC to increase nominal fare every 1 or 2-year so that people don’t say it’s too much. If we take into account last 8-year inflation rate fare should have been increased by max 20rs,” wrote a user on X.
The rates were also hiked for Airport Express Line by Re 1 to Rs 5 depending upon travel distance. The longest journey from New Delhi Station to Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25 will now cost commuters Rs 75.
