New Delhi, Sep 10 (PTI) The Delhi Police has seized 48,600 Alprazolam tablets weighing around 5.8 kg and arrested a 43-year-old man allegedly involved in their illegal supply in the national capital, officials said on Thursday.
The recovery is nearly 59 times the notified commercial quantity of 100 grams in India, they said.
Alprazolam is a notified psychotropic substance and its possession, transportation, sale and distribution are regulated under law. Police said such medicines cannot be legally possessed or transported without a valid prescription and authorised documentation.
The accused, Sunil Verma, a resident of Shahdara, was apprehended on Wednesday while he was travelling in his car to supply the psychotropic tablets, the police said.
A trap was laid at the T-point of Basant Road and Panchkuian Road in Paharganj, where Verma was intercepted, they said.
A search of his car led to the recovery of 48,600 Alprazolam tablets weighing approximately 5.8 kg, they added.
A case under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered at Paharganj police station and Verma was arrested, the officials said.
During interrogation, Verma allegedly disclosed that he was involved in supplying psychotropic substances and had been supplying them to medical shops in Shahdara and east Delhi areas, they said.
Verma is a graduate and works in the manufacturing of cold boxes used as vaccine carriers, the police said.
The investigation is focused on establishing the source from which the tablets were procured and identifying other persons and establishments allegedly linked to their illegal supply chain.
The car used for transporting the tablets has also been taken into police possession, they added. PTI SSJ APL
