New Delhi, June 24 (PTI) Lieutenant Governor (LG) Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday asked the Delhi Police to launch a highly visible traffic police presence on the city’s roads and major choke points, directing them to aggressively impose fines for wrong-side driving, triple-riding on two-wheelers and helmetless riding.
Sandhu reviewed the Delhi Police work in a meeting attended by Commissioner of Police Satish Golchha and top officers, emphasising proactive, visible and citizen-centric policing in the city. Addressing urban mobility and ground-level security challenges, the LG stressed the urgent need to tackle traffic violations through stringent enforcement of regulations, officials said.
Sandhu also directed a robust local intelligence system by integrating street vendors, Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs), and Market Welfare Associations (MWAs) into the community policing framework.
He told the top brass of the Delhi Police that they should prioritise the safety and security of women, children, and senior citizens, officials said. They said the LG asked to actively leverage modern technologies — including artificial intelligence, drones, facial recognition systems and social media monitoring — for crime prevention.
Sandhu emphasised that officers must remain approachable, empathetic, and firm, projecting fairness and transparency to strengthen public trust and confidence.
The LG instructed officers to proactively identify potential crime scenes, pre-empt street crimes, and pay special attention to the safety of girl students. The LG highlighted the importance of personnel welfare and predictable, transparent transfer policies to avoid stagnation and favouritism.
He directed focused efforts to ensure timely promotions for lower ranks, significantly increasing female representation in the force, and actively exploring Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding to augment Martyr funds.
Aligning with broader civic goals, he also instructed that police residential complexes must be transformed into “zero-waste” colonies, seamlessly replicating the successful Navjeevan Vihar model with the support of the MCD, officials said. VIT ASD ASD
