New Delhi, Sep 23 (PTI) Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday directed a safety audit of all city parks and deployment of Pink Police personnel around their premises following the gangrape of a teenage girl at a park in southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji area.
Sandhu met the Delhi Police Commissioner, MCD Commissioner and DDA Vice Chairman at the Lok Niwas, the LG Office said in a post on X.
He directed that a comprehensive safety audit of all Delhi parks be conducted within a week, with emphasis on adequate lighting, security, regular patrolling and cleanliness.
The Delhi Police was also directed to strengthen beat patrolling, including deployment of Pink Police personnel around park premises, it said.
The directions have also been issued for the regular visits of parks by the beat constables and local police in-charges.
The 17-year-old girl from Faridabad was gangraped by three men at Ashta Kunj Park near the Kalkaji temple on Monday evening.
All three accused were arrested. One accused Asif was arrested after an encounter with the police, in which he sustained a bullet injury on the leg, police said.
The Vice Chairman of Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will undertak the safety audit of all parks in their respective jurisdictions and submit a report within one week, officials at Lok Niwas said.
The audit will take into account the provision for adequate lighting in the parks, presence of security guards at all entry and exit points of the parks as well as patrolling by guards inside the park premises during hours after sunset, they said.
The audit will also assess cleanliness and sanitation arrangements.
The possibility of handing over the parks to the resident welfare associations (RWAs) and private entities, for maintenance and upkeep will also be explored, the officials said.
The LG also directed the authorities to interact with local institutions including colleges and schools, around the parks, for their feedback. PTI VIT
