New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) Eligibility conditions of Delhi government’s newly launched Lakshmi Yojana that require recommendations from MPs or MLAs to avail benefits was “impractical”, alleged Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav on Monday.
Addressing reporters, Yadav said women who fulfilled the government’s eligibility criteria should not be required to obtain recommendations from elected representatives.
“If a woman fulfils the eligibility criteria and is genuinely in need, why do you need recommendations from an MLA or an MP? Will women keep filling forms and making rounds of MPs’ and MLAs’ offices?” he said.
There was no immediate statement available from the Delhi government on the Congress’ claims.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on August 1 launched the online registration portal for the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, under which eligible women in the national capital will receive financial assistance of Rs 2,500 per month.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the scheme is expected to benefit around 17 lakh women, with the Delhi government allocating Rs 5,110 crore in the 2026-27 budget for its implementation.
Calling the provision “very impractical,” the Congress leader also questioned the reported disbursal mechanism under the scheme.
“I have come to know that only Rs 1,000 will be accessible initially and the remaining Rs 1,500 can be withdrawn only before the 2029 elections. Under what law, has this been decided? Why link it to elections?” he asked.
Yadav said women should receive the full promised amount of Rs 2,500 so that they could use it for household expenses, children’s education and other essential needs. PTI MSJ SKY SKY
