Gangtok, Apr 17 (PTI) Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Friday said he was “deeply disheartened” over the defeat of the Constitution amendment bill to implement reservation for women in legislatures by 2029.
The bill to implement reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of seats of the Lok Sabha was defeated in the Lower House on Friday evening.
“I am deeply disheartened that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam could not be passed in the Lok Sabha despite the hopes and aspirations of millions of women across our country,” Tamang said in a social media post.
Tamang said that the mothers, sisters, and daughters of Sikkim had come together in large numbers, raising their voices in support of “this historic reform” by taking out a rally in the state capital.
“The unity of women reflected a powerful belief in equality, dignity, and representation,” the CM said.
“The Opposition is indulging in ruthless politics. They are obstructing women’s reservation because they know who will get the credit for bringing in the Women’s Reservation Bill,” he said.
While 298 members voted in support of the Bill, 230 MPs voted against it. Out of 528 members who voted, the bill required 352 votes for a two-thirds majority.
Tamang, whose party, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), is part of the NDA, said the opposition “will face the wrath of the women of this country for their actions”.
“It is unfortunate that such a transformative opportunity has been stalled due to political considerations. This is not just a missed opportunity, it is a setback to the dreams of countless women who seek their rightful place in decision-making.
“Despite this, we remain committed. The voice of women cannot be suppressed, and their aspirations will continue to guide us towards a more just and empowered India,” Tamang added. PTI KDK RBT
