New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram, May 11 (PTI) CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan on Monday said that the decision on selecting the LoP in Kerala Assembly would be taken later in the state.

He told reporters this after the CPI(M) Polit Bureau meeting in New Delhi on Monday.

“The decision about the Leader of Opposition will be taken in Kerala,” he said.

When asked whether there would be a Deputy Leader of Opposition, Govindan said that too would be decided in Kerala.

The CPI, the second major constituent in the LDF, has been staking a claim to the Deputy Leader of Opposition post.

Govindan said matters related to the Leader of Opposition and Deputy Leader of Opposition were not discussed at the Polit Bureau meeting.

Even though reporters approached former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for a response, he did not comment.

While certain reports claim that Vijayan will become the Leader of Opposition, there is also speculation that he may hand over the responsibility of leading the front in the Assembly to former finance minister K N Balagopal.

Earlier, Govindan had said the party would announce the Leader of Opposition after the Congress announced the Chief Minister.

The decision on the next Kerala Chief Minister is currently under the consideration of the Congress High Command, with V D Satheesan, K C Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala being seen as contenders for the post.

The CPI(M)-led LDF lost power in the just concluded Assembly elections and the alliance managed to win only 35 out of the 140 seats.

On the other hand, the Congress-led UDF secured 102 seats. PTI TBA TBA ADB
