Jaipur, Jun 18 (PTI) Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday termed the reported deaths of five women at Kota’s New Medical College as “extremely serious and disturbing”, alleging that a probe has pointed to negligence in treatment.
In a statement, Gehlot said the deaths were not “normal” and described them as “institutional failures”, citing reports that flagged possible infection in the operation theatre (OT).
Referring to findings by a team from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), he claimed that indications of infection in the OT contradicted assertions made by the hospital administration.
Gehlot also said that several other women admitted at the facility were in critical condition.
“Five women are still battling for their lives and are undergoing dialysis due to severe complications,” he said.
The former chief minister said he had met the affected families during a visit to Kota and alleged that they were uncertain about further treatment and support after discharge.
He demanded that the state government bear the full cost of treatment if any of the patients suffer long-term complications, including kidney damage.
Raising concerns over healthcare facilities in the state, Gehlot also referred to a similar situation in Bikaner, alleging that poor hospital conditions and infection risks were affecting patients there as well.
He urged the government to take strict action against those responsible, including suspension of concerned officials and doctors, and called for criminal cases to be registered in the matter.
Gehlot also demanded immediate compensation for the affected families, alleging that the incidents reflected systemic failures in the state’s healthcare system.
There was no immediate response from the state government or the hospital administration to the allegations. PTI AG MDO MDO
