Kolkata, Jul 26 (PTI) Trinamool Congress students’ wing on Saturday alleged that the officiating vice chancellor of Calcutta University had intentionally scheduled examinations to prevent students from participating in the student wing’s foundation day rally on August 28.

VC Santa Dutta, however, maintained that the semester exam schedule was declared keeping in mind the academic calendar of the higher educational institution, classes, government holidays and other factors and had nothing to do with the foundation day rally of the state’s ruling party.

Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) state unit president Trinankur Bhattacharya said, “This is no simple academic decision. This is a political move by the university administration and the VC, whose appointment had been made at the behest of the BJP government in Delhi to embarrass the TMCP and prevent its supporters from attending the rally.” “The decision to hold the BCom semester-4 and BA-LLB semester-4 exams on that date have been taken deliberately. The timing has been fixed from 2 pm-5 pm. Don’t you think it has been timed to prevent our supporters from participating in the foundation day programme?” Bhattacharrya asked.

In response, Dutta said the semester exam schedule has been fixed keeping in mind the state holidays and the academic calendar and “cannot be decided based on the political programme of any organisation.” “If we have to take in consideration the programme of one organisation (TMCP) for scheduling an examination, we have to think about political programmes of other organisations, which is not possible,” she said.

Dutta was appointed as the officiating VC by Governor C V Ananda Bose in 2023 after CU’s full time VC Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee left following allegations of illegalities in her appointment by the state government. PTI SUS MNB
