Ranchi, Apr 19 (PTI) Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday said the opposition parties led by Congress will face consequences for “‘conspiring” to derail the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.

Accusing the Congress of being “anti-women”, Sonowal alleged the opposition has insulted the women of the country by putting obstacles to the bill.

“The Congress will have to face the consequences of conspiring to derail the Women’s Reservation Bill. Women of the country are aware now,” Sonowal said, addressing a press conference here at the BJP headquarters in Ranchi.

The Union minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways alleged that crime against women is high in states where Congress is in power or in alliance in the government.

“In Jharkhand, Congress is with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Crime against women is on the rise in the state,” he alleged.

Former Bihar Minister and MLA Shreyashi Singh was also present on the occasion.

She alleged that the Congress, along with other opposition parties, hatched the conspiracy, as they do not want this to be implemented before the 2029 elections.

In another press conference, Jharkhand Congress accused the BJP of hatching a conspiracy to not grant reservation to women but to grab power.

“If the Centre is serious about the issue of providing reservation to women, the bill—which was unanimously passed in 2023—should be implemented immediately,” Jharkhand Congress president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh told reporters.

He said the government should take steps to provide 33 per cent reservation to women within the current 543 seats of the Lok Sabha in the 2029 general elections. PTI SAN RG
