Mumbai, May 27 (PTI) Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad on Wednesday alleged that the BJP government is using the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process through the Election Commission to manipulate voter lists.
She asked the party workers to ensure that not a single Mumbaikar’s name is deleted from the electoral rolls.
Addressing a meeting of district presidents, frontal organisations and cell office-bearers, Gaikwad said the right to vote is not merely a Constitutional right, but the soul of democracy.
“However, the BJP government is manipulating even the voters’ lists through the Election Commission. In states where the SIR process has been carried out, a large number of voters have been removed from the electoral rolls,” she alleged.
The meeting reviewed the current status of the SIR process in Mumbai and discussed measures being undertaken by booth-level agents (BLAs) to ensure that citizens are not deprived of their voting rights for any reason, the Congress said.
Mumbai Congress spokesperson Sureshchandra Rajhans said Gaikwad also asked party functionaries to strengthen the organisation and intensify agitations on public issues. PTI MR NSK
