Jaipur, May 27 (PTI) Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra on Wednesday said that the party strengthened former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s vision of panchayati raj and grassroots democracy in the country.

Addressing a training camp organised under the party’s “Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan” in Pushkar, Dotasra said Nehru believed democracy should begin from the village level and power should reach people through decentralised governance.

“Nehru viewed villages not merely as administrative units but as the backbone of national development and social justice,” he said.

Dotasra recalled that Nehru had formally launched the country’s first panchayati raj system from Nagaur district in Rajasthan on October 2, 1959.

All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba addressed district presidents during the camp and spoke about women’s empowerment and political participation.

She said the Congress was committed to “Nari Nyay” and equality and credited the party with introducing 33 per cent reservation for women in panchayati raj institutions and enacting laws for women’s safety.

Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully said that Congress workers and the grassroots organisational structure remained the party’s biggest strength. He asked the district presidents to take the party’s ideology and welfare policies to villages across the state.

Rajasthan Mahila Congress president Sarika Singh said increasing women’s participation in politics was the need of the hour and urged the party leaders to provide greater leadership opportunities to women. PTI SDA KSS KSS
