Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jul 7 (PTI) A 42-year-old cloth merchant from Maharashtra’s Beed district allegedly committed suicide after being harassed for money by some persons, police said on Monday.

The police have registered a case against a man (prime accused), his wife and five other persons for abetment of suicide and other charges, they said.

The businessman, Ram Fatale, allegedly committed suicide at his residence in Shaniwar Peth area of Beed on July 5 night, an official said.

Fatale borrowed Rs 2.5 lakh at an interest rate of 10 per cent seven years ago from the key accused, who is not an authorised money lender. The businessman and his father returned the money before the COVID-19 lockdown (2020), as per the FIR registered by the police.

The key accused and others, however, kept harassing Fatale with a demand of Rs 25,000 per month, and also refused to return a signed cheque book belonging to the victim, it said.

On Friday, the main accused and his wife went to Fatale’s residence and allegedly harassed him for the money.

The businessman’s family members found him hanging on Sunday morning when they got up. He was taken to a government hospital where he was declared dead, the police said.

A suicide note was found in the pocket of his pants in which he purportedly mentioned about the harassment from the key accused and his wife, the FIR said.

The businessman also mentioned in the note that he had repaid the entire loan but the man was still harassing him for money, it said.

The police on Sunday registered a case against the seven accused relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Money-Lending (Regulation) Act 2014, the official said. PTI AW GK
