Jalna, Oct 16 (PTI) A Class XI student allegedly committed suicide in Maharashtra’s Jalna district after being repeatedly pressured by a 21-year-old man for marriage, a police official said on Friday.

The 17-year-old girl ended her life on October 9, and the man was booked on Friday on the complaint of the deceased’s uncle, the Jalna tehsil police station official added.

Accused Dhanraj Lahane was stalking her and asking her to elope with him, the official said.

“The girl had spoken about the harassment with her parents. Her kin had also warned Lahane to stay away. On October 9, Lahane allegedly barged into her house, threatened her and abused her brother. The girl hanged herself some time later,” the official said.

No arrest has been made in the case so far, he added. PTI COR BNM

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
