New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) A civil rights organisation on Saturday condemned the detention of youths protesting for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the authorities of “flagrantly trampling” upon citizens’ rights.

The organisation, Jan Hastakshep, also said that despite the Central government turning the national capital into an impregnable fortress, thousands of people managed to stage peaceful protests at dozens of locations.

“Strongly condemning this assault on citizens’ constitutional right to protest and their right to freedom of movement, the Jan Hastakshep demands that metro, internet and railway services not be disrupted during protests in future,” its co-convenor Anil Dubey said in a statement.

The organisation also condemned the police action against students, youth, lawyers, political party leaders and trade union leaders who were peacefully protesting in Delhi.

Police on Saturday detained more than 3,000 people in different parts of the New Delhi district during a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.

Several INDIA bloc leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, were among those detained. PTI ACB RUK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
