New Delhi, Sep 23 (PTI) Eleven child labourers, including two who were paid only in chips and biscuits instead of wages, were rescued from various roadside eateries and shops in south Delhi’s Tigri, an NGO said on Wednesday.
The children, all boys aged between six and 17 years, were rescued during a joint operation in the area under Tigri police station, following information provided by the Association for Voluntary Action (AVA), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that partners with government and communities to prevent child exploitation and strengthen child protection systems.
The two youngest children, aged six and 10, were found working at a slipper shop, where the shop owner allegedly gave them chips and biscuits instead of wages, according to the organisation.
Five of the 11 children had not been paid any wages, while those who received payment were allegedly given only nominal amounts, it said.
The rescued children hail from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra and were found working without proper wages and safeguards and were given chips and biscuits instead of proper payment, according to the AVA.
The operation was carried out by the Deoli tehsildar, Labour Department officials, police personnel, representatives of the Child Development Department, AVA and Bal Vikas Dhara (BVD).
Eleven establishments where the children were found working were sealed following the operation, the organisation said.
It added that the SDM recorded statements of all the rescued children and that an investigation is underway into the circumstances in which they were employed.
The children underwent medical examinations following the rescue and were subsequently sent to a children’s home, it added. PTI SHB APL
