Janjgir, Sep 11 (PTI) A 35-year-old man died allegedly following a seizure attack at a hospital while he was in police custody in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa district, with his family alleging assault by cops, and demanded a probe.
The man, identified as Shiv Sahis of Mehndipara area under Champa police station limits, was taken into custody in connection with an Excise Act case on Wednesday and he died during treatment here at the district hospital on Thursday morning, police said.
Janjgir-Champa Additional Superintendent of Police Yulandan Yark said police had received information on Wednesday about the alleged illegal sale of liquor in the Champa police station area, following which action was taken.
Sahis was allegedly caught with 20 litres of illicit mahua liquor at his house, he said, adding that due procedure was followed and he was medically examined.
At around 10.30 pm on Wednesday, his health suddenly deteriorated at the police station, following which he was taken to a local hospital. Doctors said he appeared to have suffered a seizure, Yark said.
As his condition worsened the next morning, he was shifted to the district hospital in Janjgir, where he died during treatment at around 8 am, the officer said.
Senior officials were subsequently informed and the court was also apprised of the incident, following which a judicial inquiry was ordered, Yark said.
The exact cause of death will be known only after receiving the post-mortem examination report, he said.
The ASP said a complaint was also received alleging suspicious conduct by a constable in connection with the case.
Constable Ishwari Rathore was suspended with immediate effect for alleged gross negligence and indiscipline in handling the case under the Excise Act, the officer said.
Sahis’ family members alleged that he was assaulted in police custody.
A large number of people and his family members gathered at the Champa police station and staged a protest on Thursday.
