Chennai, Oct 5 (PTI) The IIT-Madras on Monday hosted an event to celebrate the arrival of ‘Cashless Nation: How UPI Changed Everything’, a new book chronicling the conception and remarkable rise of India’s Unified Payments Interface.

Co-authored by IIT-M alumnus and technologist Santanu Paul and veteran career banker B Sambamurthy, the Penguin Random House publication coincides with the 10th anniversary of the UPI ecosystem.

Hosted by IIT-M Director V Kamakoti, the campus event was attended by former RBI Governor C Rangarajan, former WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan, and BSE India MD and CEO Sundararaman Ramamurthy.

Delivering the keynote, Rangarajan called the book a “brilliant narrative” of the events, policies, and personalities behind UPI.

“It is an envy of the world now, and open to everyone from a street vendor to a billionaire,” he said, praising its engaging storytelling.

Kamakoti noted UPI has become a global role model, driving the nation’s economic growth.

Drawing on the authors’ direct experience with institutions like NPCI and IDRBT, the book offers a ringside view of India’s digital transformation, previously lauded by Nandan Nilekani as reading “like a thriller.” PTI JR KH

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
