Palghar, Sep 3 (PTI) The Palghar Zilla Parishad has announced a targeted campaign across the district to remove stray cows and bulls from public roads to prevent frequent accidents and also ensure safe shelter for cattle, officials said on Thursday.
Cattle owners have been given a two-day deadline to claim and secure their stray livestock, after which authorities will seize any stray animals found on the streets and permanently transfer them to registered shelters, they added.
The decision was finalized during a high-level coordination meeting on Wednesday chaired by Palghar Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Manoj Ranade, alongside local shelter representatives, animal welfare advocates, police officials, non-governmental organizations, and Corporate Social Responsibility partners, an official said.
A coordinated drive will be executed on the night of September 8 focusing on mapping stray cattle clusters, managing transport logistics under police protection, and transferring animals safely to partner facilities, he said.
Livestock collected from Palghar-Mahim-Boisar belt will be shifted to shelters in Devkhop and Vasai, while animals picked up from the Achhad-Charoti area will be relocated to a facility in Vapi, the official informed.
During the meeting, animal welfare volunteers and shelter trustees raised several operational requests, including official identification badges for night operations, administrative funding, standardizing the colour scheme for cattle ambulances, and legal support so individual shelters do not bear litigation costs for confiscated cattle.
