New Delhi, Jun 17 (PTI) CPI(M) leader John Brittas has written to Union Health Minister J P Nadda, seeking intervention in concerns raised by candidates over the transparency and fairness of the NEET-MDS 2026 examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).
In a letter to the minister, the Rajya Sabha MP has expressed concern over the refusal of the NBEMS to disclose answer keys and individual response sheets, despite repeated demands from candidates, saying transparency is fundamental to the credibility of any national-level competitive examination.
The letter said candidates must have a reasonable opportunity to verify their performance and understand the basis of their scores.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader noted that the NBEMS has maintained that answer keys and answer sheets would not be disclosed and that requests for re-evaluation, rechecking or re-totalling would not be entertained.
“Such a position effectively deprives candidates of any avenue to independently verify the accuracy of the evaluation process in an examination that determines postgraduate admissions and professional careers,” he said.
Brittas also flagged grievances raised by aspirants regarding discrepancies in their expected performance and the results declared.
While the veracity of individual complaints may require examination, the volume of representations received and the absence of transparency have created anxiety among candidates and their families and undermined confidence in the process, he said.
The Left leader further sought a clarification regarding the award of full marks for questions reportedly found to be “technically incorrect” after the examination.
He said many candidates have complained that they were unable to identify any manifestly-incorrect questions during the examination and were, therefore, unable to understand the basis on which such marks were awarded.
“In a highly-competitive national examination, where even a marginal variation in marks can significantly alter rankings and career prospects, complete transparency in the evaluation process is indispensable,” Brittas said.
He urged the health ministry to examine the grievances raised by candidates and direct the NBEMS to place the answer key, individual response sheets and a detailed explanation of the evaluation methodology adopted for NEET-MDS 2026 in the public domain.
Brittas also called for an independent review of the examination and result process to address concerns raised by aspirants and restore public confidence. PTI AO RC
