Etah/Kasganj (UP), Jun 7 (PTI) Police said on Sunday that they recovered the bodies of three brothers from Hathras who drowned while bathing in the Nadrai-Hazara canal here, following nearly 20 hours of searching. According to the police, a joint team comprising the PAC Flood Unit and local police retrieved the three bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination.
The deceased were identified as Jaiprakash (25), Ajay (24), and Chhotu (22), all residents of Tikri Nagla village under the Sikandara Rau police station area in Hathras district.
Police said the brothers on Saturday came to the Nadrai-Hazara canal in the Kotwali police station area of Kasganj district headquarters with their friend, Sumit, to bathe.
“While bathing, the three brothers ventured into deep water and began to drown. Sumit swam to safety, but a strong current swept the other three away,” police said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Omprakash Singh said the PAC Flood Unit immediately launched a rescue operation upon receiving the information.
The SP said Jaiprakash’s body was found on Sunday about half a kilometre from the incident site, and Chhotu’s body was recovered two and a half kilometres away. The body of the third brother, Ajay, was also retrieved, he said.
Villagers said the three brothers supported their family through farming and were all married.
Chhotu, a resident of Lodhmai village in Etah, was married on February 20 this year, they said.
Police said the family, consisting of five brothers and two sisters, had previously lost one brother and their father.
The SP described the incident as deeply tragic, noting that the simultaneous death of three brothers has devastated the family.
A wave of grief has swept through Tikri Nagla village and the surrounding areas following the accident. PTI COR NAV ASD ASD
