Agartala, Apr 17 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday claimed that the failure to pass the constitutional amendment bill in the Lok Sabha reveals the opposition parties’ anti-women mentality, and it was a ‘Black Day’ for Indian democracy.

Saha’s statement came after the Constitution Amendment Bill to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816 was defeated.

“Today’s failure to pass the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill-2026 in Lok Sabha reveals the Congress, TMC, DMK, SP, and INDIA alliance’s deep-seated anti-women mentality,” Saha said in a Facebook post.

While 298 members voted in support of the bill in the Lok Sabha, 230 MPs voted against it. Out of 528 members who voted, the bill required 352 votes for a two-third majority.

“This is a dark chapter in our democracy. It’s not just a bill’s defeat, it’s the shattering of millions of sisters’ trust in a brighter future. While we envision ‘Nari Shakti’ empowerment, the opposition’s narrow mindset has erected a wall on their path. This is an insult to their dreams and strength,” the CM said.

The opposition’s insult to Nari Shakti will cost them dearly, claimed the BJP leader.

According to the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, Lok Sabha seats were to be increased to 816 from the current 543 to “operationalise” the women’s reservation law before the 2029 parliamentary polls, following a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census.

Seats were also to be increased in state and Union territory assemblies to accommodate 33 per cent reservation for women.

Saha said, “This rage won’t stop. From 2029 Lok Sabha polls to every local election, India’s women will teach a harsh lesson to those who trample their aspirations. Remember: This wrath marks the beginning of the political end of opposition.” PTI PS NN
