Anand, May 4 (PTI) BJP candidate Harshadbhai Parmar took a clear lead over Congress rival Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan in the Umreth assembly bypoll in Gujarat, as per the latest counting trends available on Monday.
The vote counting was underway at BJVM College at Vallabh Vidyanagar in Anand district amid tight security.
Parmar received 33,745 votes after the completion of the ninth round, compared to 23,310 votes polled for Chauhan, as per the Election Commission’s website.
Four other candidates — three Independents and a candidate from a lesser-known party — trailed far behind them.
The bypoll was necessitated following the death of the then-sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar. The BJP fielded his son Harshad Parmar, and it is his first major election.
Congress nominee Chauhan served as the president of the Umreth taluka panchayat for three consecutive terms between 2000 and 2015. He is currently the Opposition party’s coordinator for the central zone in the state.
In the election held on April 23, a voter turnout of 59.04 per cent was recorded at 306 polling stations of the assembly seat.
Nearly 700 officials and employees, including 14 counting supervisors, 14 assistants and 14 micro supervisors, have been appointed for the counting of votes, an official said.
In the 2022 assembly elections, Govind Parmar had retained the Umreth seat for the BJP. PTI KA PD GK
