Jaipur, Apr 19 (PTI) Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee chief Govind Singh Dotasra on Sunday accused the BJP of attempting to derive political advantage from the women’s reservation law and questioned the delay in its implementation.

Dotasra said the Women’s Reservation Bill, passed by Parliament on September 22, 2023, was supported by the opposition.

He said the Congress had first introduced the women’s reservation bill in 1996 and later ensured its passage in the Rajya Sabha in 2010 during the UPA government, claiming that BJP and its allies had opposed it then.

He accused the BJP-led NDA government of bringing the 2023 law with conditions and delaying its implementation, alleging that the required notification was issued only recently.

The Congress leader also questioned the delay in conducting the Census, which was due in 2021, and alleged that the government was trying to carry out delimitation based on 2011 data to avoid extending reservation benefits to Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

He further alleged that the proposed delimitation exercise was aimed at politically benefiting the BJP by altering the distribution of parliamentary seats.

The INDIA bloc had opposed such moves and demanded clarity from the government on whether women’s reservation would be implemented on the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats, Dostara said.

“Congress would continue to raise the issue and mobilise public opinion across the state in support of immediate implementation of women’s reservation,” he said.

Mahila Congress state president Sarika Singh alleged that the BJP had failed to meet the expectations of women and accused it of using the issue for electoral gains.

She said the Mahila Congress would take out a march on Monday demanding immediate implementation of women’s reservation. PTI SDA PRK
