Kolkata, Apr 17 (PTI) Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Friday alleged that BJP supporters abused a woman party worker in the presence of her two-year-old daughter in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district.

Expressing hope that the Election Commission would take action against those involved in the “heinous attack on the woman”, he said that while one person has been arrested, all those named in the FIR should be brought to book.

Alleging that some CPI(M) workers who later joined the BJP were involved in the incident targeting Sathi Gorai Kuila at Sabang, Banerjee said, “I am giving my word, after May 4 — the day of counting — we will bring all those behind the incident and not arrested by police to Sathi’s residence and make them apologise to her.” Daring Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks that TMC workers involved in alleged attacks on BJP supporters should stay indoors on polling and counting days, Banerjee said, “I challenge Shah to stay in Kolkata on the day of counting and see the huge public response following TMC’s victory.” “I don’t believe in the policy of niceties of our supremo Mamata Banerjee. There will be a mix of Rabindrasangeet and DJ music in our victory celebrations on May 4,” he said.

Addressing a rally in support of TMC candidate from Sabang, Manas Ranjan Bhunia, Banerjee alleged, “BJP leaders call us Bangladeshis for speaking Bengali and expressing our love for Bengal.” “Those who broke the bust of social reformer Iswarchandra Vidyasagar in 2019 are now moving around with fish in hand to show their fake love for the state, its culture and food habits.” “After May 4, BJP leaders who imposed diktats on our food habits, threatened to stop the sale of fish and meat, and insulted us and our icons, will be forced to sell fish and meat at the same spot in markets alongside other vendors,” he added.

The senior TMC leader alleged that the BJP was luring voters with cash and urged people “to accept the money as it belongs to taxpayers and vote against the lotus symbol”.

The elections to the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be held in two phases – on April 23 and 29. Votes will be counted on May 4. PTI SUS MNB
