Guwahati, Apr 23 (PTI) The BJP’s women’s wing in Assam on Thursday staged a rally here in protest against the Congress and the INDIA bloc for stalling the passage of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, seeking to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies from the 2029 parliamentary polls.
Members of the party’s mahila morcha, along with senior leaders, began the procession from the Veterinary Field at Khanapara and marched through major thoroughfares of the city.
Addressing the gathering, BJP state president Dilip Saikia accused the Congress of failing to take sincere steps to ensure political rights for women despite being in power for decades after Independence.
He asserted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the goal of 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies would soon be realised.
Saikia also accused the Congress and other opposition parties of promoting dynastic politics, alleging that they had historically prioritised women from their own families.
Former Union Minister Bijoya Chakravarty asserted that women must and will secure their rightful place in governance.
State BJP Mahila Morcha president Nilima Devi also accused the Congress of being anti-women.
The opposition by the Congress and INDIA alliance to the Nari Shakti Vandan (Amendment) Act, 2026, is a direct affront to women’s dignity and aspirations, an insult that the women of this nation will neither forget nor forgive, she said.
Their anti-women ideology stands exposed as a hindrance to the nation’s progress and inclusive development, she added.
Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog and Guwahati MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi were also at the forefront of the procession.
NDA allies, including AGP’s Purabi Talukdar, BPF’s Begum Akhtara Ahmed, Rabha Hasong leaders Sita Rabha and Jonali Rabha also joined the rally. PTI DG DG MNB
