New Delhi, Apr 21 (PTI) Delhi BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal on Wednesday slammed the Congress over the defeat of a Constitution amendment bill that sought to facilitate women’s quota, calling it a “great betrayal” of women of the country.

“The very House in which Rahul Gandhi brought down the women’s reservation bill, will again create history by granting women their rightful share in the future,” the Chandni Chowk MP said in a press conference.

On April 17, the 131st Constitution Amendment Bill, which aimed to increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850 and implement 33 per cent women’s reservation in legislative bodies before the 2029 general election, failed to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha.

Out of 528 members who voted, 298 were in favour, while 230 MPs opposed the bill, which required 352 votes to pass.

“Had this bill been passed, Priyanka Gandhi could have emerged as a strong and influential leader within the Congress, and perhaps this very political apprehension motivated Rahul Gandhi to oppose the bill,” Khandelwal claimed.

The BJP leader said that women’s reservation in governance is not merely a matter of political representation, but the foundation of social justice, equal opportunity, and the “nation’s holistic development.” PTI VIT VIT KSI VN VN
