BJP govt trying to suppress protests just like the British during freedom struggle: Tikaram Jully

Jaipur, Oct 10 (PTI) Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly Tikaram Jully on Saturday said the BJP government is trying to suppress protests by young people and the Congress, comparing its approach to that of British rulers during India’s freedom struggle.

“The BJP government is disturbed by public protests and the voices of young people, just as the British administration had been troubled by the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi,” he said.

“The situation today reminds us of the time when the Congress, under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership, was fighting for India’s independence through non-violence. Just as the British rulers were afraid of peaceful protests and the unity of people, the BJP government today is disturbed by public movements and the voice of the youth,” he said.

Jully alleged that the government has lost faith in democratic discussion and dialogue, and is relying on police action to deal with protests.

“Instead of listening to the genuine demands of young people, the government is trying to put pressure on them. The BJP, blinded by the arrogance of power, has forgotten the language of dialogue,” he said.

The Congress leader said history has shown that the voices of young people against injustice could not be silenced through police action.

He also accused the BJP of adopting double standards towards the younger generation.

“On one hand, the BJP governments at the Centre and in the state call young people ‘Yuva Shakti’ and make tall claims about their welfare. On the other, when these young people raise their voices peacefully for their rights, future and justice, the BJP does not hesitate to call their protests anarchic,” Jully said.

He said the country’s youth would give a fitting response to the BJP’s unjust treatment of protesters. PTI SDA RUK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
