New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI) Biodiversity in India is inseparable from people’s lives, knowledge, and livelihoods, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said on Wednesday at a side event of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP-17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Yerevan, Armenia.
During his address, the minister highlighted the importance of building implementation capacity, sustaining finance, and ensuring that biodiversity conservation and sustainable use contribute to human well-being and intergenerational equity.
Yadav also referred to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and said that the responsibility of countries extends beyond adopting targets to building the capacity and mobilising the resources necessary to implement them.
Adopted in 2022, the framework sets out an ambitious pathway to reach the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050.
During the side event, four publications were released. First was the ‘Guidelines for the Designation of India’s Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (I-OECMs) 2026’, which would support recognising conservation outcomes beyond conventional protected areas, subject to appropriate criteria and governance.
Second was the ‘5th National Report on Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety’, which reflects the importance India attaches to transparent reporting and responsible biosafety governance.
Third was ‘The Convention on Biological Diversity Handbook: Reference Guide and Indian Perspective’, which aims to strengthen informed participation and continuity in implementation by providing accessible reference material on an increasingly complex international process. Fourth was the ‘India’s ABS Success Story’, which highlights India’s position as a globally acknowledged leader in Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS).
The ABS mechanism, established under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, ensures that benefits arising from the utilisation of biological resources are shared fairly and equitably with local communities, Biodiversity Management Committees, farmers, and traditional knowledge holders. PTI ALC NB
