Patna, Jun 8 (PTI) RJD president Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya on Monday voiced strong displeasure over party MLC Sunil Kumar Singh filing nomination papers for another term in the Bihar Legislative Council, questioning the decision to renominate him and alleging that it had caused resentment among party workers.
Although the party has not made a formal announcement, Singh, who is known to be close to the RJD supremo’s family, turned up at the Vidhan Sabha secretariat to file his papers for the June 18 elections.
When journalists asked whether he was filing his nomination papers with RJD leadership’s approval, Singh shot back, “Of course, it is so. I will always work to strengthen the party”.
The elections will be held for 10 seats in the council, comprising nine biennial vacancies and one bypoll seat vacated by JD(U) president and former chief minister Nitish Kumar following his election to the Rajya Sabha. The terms of the nine sitting members are due to expire on June 28.
Soon after, Acharya took to X to express her displeasure without naming Singh or any senior party leader.
“How was such a person selected as a candidate by the individual to whom Lalu Ji had entrusted the responsibility of carrying forward the struggle for social justice and strengthening the party? There is no dearth of committed and loyal workers in the party,” she wrote.
She alleged that the decision had caused resentment among party workers and supporters who had stood firmly with the organisation for years.
“The damage caused by such individuals was clearly visible in the Assembly elections held last year,” she said.
“Factionalism, internal sabotage, betrayal, deceit, collusion with opponents, and using the pretext of closeness to gather information and then extort others are the style of functioning of this person (without taking Singh’s name). He makes vulgar and indecent remarks about sisters and daughters of party workers”, she wrote.
Acharya further said there were several dedicated grassroots workers, minority leaders and young representatives from Yadav, Dalit, backward and other deprived communities who had remained steadfast with the party.
“Ignoring these people is a matter of serious concern and certainly not in the party’s best interest,” she said.
Acharya’s remarks come against the backdrop of continuing strains within the Yadav family following the RJD’s defeat in last year’s Assembly elections.
After the electoral setback and reports of differences within the family, Acharya had announced that she was quitting politics and severing ties with her relatives.
Acharya, who came into the national spotlight after donating a kidney to her father, had contested the Saran Lok Sabha seat in 2024 but lost.
The RJD’s strength in the Bihar Assembly declined from 75 seats to 24 in the last Assembly elections. PTI NAC PKD MNB
