Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Oct 18 (PTI) A 20-year-old man was beaten to death by around 15 people after his motorcycle hit a child in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, triggering a mob rampage in a Dalit settlement during which nine houses were set ablaze, police said on Sunday.

According to a police officer, Navneet Kumar, a resident of Mohammadpur Khaje village, was allegedly assaulted by the group near Chainpur Chowk after his motorcycle hit a child on Saturday evening. He was declared dead by doctors at a hospital nearby, the officer said.

Kumar’s family has alleged that the attackers beat him with sticks and strangled him with a belt, said Muzaffarpur (Rural) SP, Rajesh Singh Prabhakar..

Following his death, a mob set nine houses of the Dalit community on fire, triggering tension in the village, he said, adding that additional forces were deployed and the situation was brought under control.

“The body has been sent for post-mortem. An investigation is underway, and the circumstances leading to the killing and arson are being examined”, the police officer added. PTI COR PKD NSD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
