Gorakhpur (UP), Apr 19 (PTI) BJP MP Ravi Kishan on Sunday accused opposition parties of committing a “grave injustice” by going against the women’s quota bill as he attacked the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress among others.
Addressing a gathering on Parashurama Jayanti, the Gorakhpur MP said that women across the country would “never forgive” parties that opposed the legislation.
“This is the biggest sin committed against women. They have deprived daughters and mothers of their rightful share,” he said.
Kishan said India’s population of 1.4 billion includes nearly 700 million women who deserve adequate representation.
“If delimitation had taken place, cities like Gorakhpur could have seen more seats, creating opportunities for women candidates,” he added.
He also questioned the opposition’s intent, alleging that they feared empowering women politically.
In view of the assembly polls scheduled this month in West Bengal, he said voters, especially women, would respond through the ballot.
The MP further expressed confidence that the BJP-led NDA would secure a decisive victory in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and return to power at the Centre in 2029 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paving the way for the bill’s reintroduction.
Kishan accused opposition parties of wanting to confine women to domestic roles. “They want women limited to household chores, which is unacceptable,” he said.
On Friday, while 298 members voted in support of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in Lok Sabha, 230 MPs voted against it. The bill required 352 votes to secure a two-third majority.
According to the Bill, Lok Sabha seats were to be increased to 816 from the current 543 to operationalise the women’s reservation law before the 2029 parliamentary polls, following a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census. Seats were also to be increased in state and Union territory assemblies to accommodate 33 per cent reservation for women.
