Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s plane crash landed at Baramati airport Wednesday morning. The Nationalist Congress Party leader was on the plane, along with four others, including plane crew members. No person on board survived the crash.

Several videos have emerged in which charred remains of the aircraft can be seen at the accident site. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has taken over the probe of the crash. Officials from AAIB and DGCA have begun the investigation at the site.

Baramati is a traditional stronghold of the Pawar family.

Tributes have been pouring in from across the political spectrum, with leaders from various parties remembering him as a committed leader. In a statement, Pawar’s NCP Wednesday paid tribute to its chief, calling the incident “extremely painful and heart-wrenching for the entire Nationalist Congress family as well as the whole of Maharashtra”.

In July 2023, Ajit Pawar along with his loyalists broke away from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)—led by his uncle Sharad Pawar—and joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)–Shiv Sena alliance in Maharashtra.

Ajit Pawar’s family, including his wife Sunetra, his sons Jay and Parth, uncle Sharad, and cousin Supriya Sule, are present in Baramati.

“Senior leader Sharad Pawar himself has very clearly stated that an accident occurred, and tragically, lives were lost in the accident, and that politics should not be played over this. I am deeply saddened that we have reached such a point where such dirty and despicable politics are being played out even over someone’s death. “The esteemed Shri Ajit ‘dada’ Pawar was not merely the president of the Nationalist Congress family; he was the guiding pillar who steadfastly steered the party’s chariot forward even through the most arduous times on his own shoulders. Beginning his political career in 1991, he never once looked back. Over his nearly 35-year-long political journey, he shaped countless workers, built leadership, and relentlessly fought for the issues of the people,” read the statement posted on the party’s X account.

It added, “Elevating the standard of living for Maharashtra’s 13 crore people, extending development to the grassroots level, and leading the state along with the nation to the pinnacle of progress—these were the central foci of his work. He always presented and resolved the struggles of the common man, farmers, labourers, youth, and women with affection, empathy, and unwavering resolve.”

4.20 pm: ‘Visibility was poor when plane crashed,’ says aviation minister

Union Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu has said that according to preliminary information, visibility at Baramati airport was poor when aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy CM Pawar crashed, reports PTI. Naidu and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol have flown to Pune from Delhi to attend Pawar’s last rites.

“Teams from the DGCA and AAIB have arrived to carry out a probe into the accident. Preliminary information suggests that visibility was poor at the time the aircraft was attempting to land,” said Naidu.

4.10 pm: Sequence of events leading to the crash

According to the person manning the ATC, the aircraft VI-SSK first came in contact with Baramati at 8.18 am, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said. When the crew enquired about the winds and visibility, they were informed that winds were calm and visibility was around 3,000 metres.

The aircraft reported on final approach of Runway 11, and the runway was not in sight to them. The crew initiated a go-around in the first approach, after which they were again asked to report runway in sight. To this, they replied, “Runway is currently not in sight, will call when runway is in sight.”

However, after a few seconds, they reported that the runway was in sight. The aircraft was cleared to land on runway 11 at 8.43 am, but there was no readback of the landing clearance. The ATC then saw the flames around the threshold of runway 11 at 8.44 am, after which emergency services rushed to the crash site.

A CCTV camera nearby captured the moment the plane crashed.

A special team will carry out the investigation, retrieving the flight recorder, Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) and Digital Engine Electronic System (DEES). Airframe and engine logbooks, work orders, on-board documents, and major inspection records related to aircraft will be gathered from the operator for scrutiny.

The probe team has also sought DGCA documents related to the crew and aircraft. Recordings of radar data, CCTV footage, ATC tape recordings, and hotline communications will be obtained for further analysis. The statements of witnesses and concerned personnel will also be recorded.

3.00 pm: Ajit Pawar’s personal security officer among those killed in crash

Among those killed in the Baramati crash was Ajit Pawar’s personal security officer, Vidip Dilip Jadhav.

Neighbours gathered Wednesday outside his house in Thane, which was locked. One of the neighbours told ANI that he is survived by his parents, wife, daughter and son.

“The government should provide them with some compensation as he has a family. The crash should be investigated and action should be taken against the company concerned,” she said.

2.45 pm: Brash, tireless, ambitious, the ‘Dada’ from Baramati

Ajit Pawar will be known as the longest-serving deputy CM of Maharashtra, though non-consecutively, so far. He has occupied that office six times. And while he nourished an ambition to lead the state from the front, take up the CM’s post, that desire will now remain unfulfilled.

Bureaucrats in Mantralaya remember Pawar as a politician with the best attendance in the secretariat. Unless he was travelling for work, he would be in his office at 8 am every day. He would call people for appointments as early as 6 am, and would even schedule his field visits at 5 am or 6 am, making it a habit for bureaucrats working with him to start their day very early.

Ajit Pawar was very unlike his uncle Sharad Pawar or cousin Supriya Sule in the way he carried himself in public life. Deep frowns, tart words, and rude dismissals of his followers were all part of the package that “Ajit dada” was.

His most controversial statement to date—“should I pee to fill up empty dams”—made at a time when distressed farmers were complaining to him about acute water shortage in April 2013, was a gaffe caused by this very demeanour. He later apologised for “hurting people’s sentiments”.

His brash, rustic style of speaking meant that he found himself in such sticky spots one too many times. Last year, he rebuked a young IPS officer, Anjana Krishna, who was taking action against illegal sand mining. On a call with Krishna, the video of which went viral, Pawar purportedly chided her when she was taking action against illegal soil excavation in a Solapur village.

NCP members close to him say they saw the man beyond the caustic words. “In reality, Ajit dada is as sweet as the aam ras (mango juice) on my plate,” an NCP leader once told ThePrint over a Gujarati thali (meal).

Manasi Phadke reports.

Two days ago, I came to know that someone from another party had given a statement that Pawar was willing to leave the BJP, and now this has happened today. I demand a proper investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court. We have trust only in the Supreme Court and no other agency. All agencies have been completely compromised.
