Ranchi, Sep 11 (PTI) Banking services, particularly at public sector banks, were affected across Jharkhand on Friday as employees joined a nationwide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions to press for various demands, including immediate implementation of a five-day workweek.

Private banks, however, remained unaffected by the strike in the state.

“Services such as cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque clearances and administrative work were hit at branches of nationalised banks, State Bank of India and Gramin banks in the state,” said Umesh Das, deputy general secretary of the Bank of India Employees Union, Jharkhand.

He said the employees were demanding that all Saturdays be declared holidays, a key demand that was reportedly agreed upon during the 12th Bipartite Settlement signed with the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) in March 2024 but is awaiting government notification.

Das said barring a few top-rank officials, all employees were on strike.

“We are also demanding uniformity in the performance-linked incentive (PLI) policy, besides updation and improvement of pension, a uniform dearness allowance formula for all pensioners and an option for employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS) to switch to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS),” he said.

Neha Shrivastava, a member of the State Bank Staff Association, said if their demands were not met, they would go on a three-day strike from September 28 to September 30 and an indefinite strike from October 26. PTI SAN MNB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
