Indore, Sep 11 (PTI) A nationwide bank strike over the demand for implementing a five-day work week and other pending issues brought operations to a halt at around 7,000 branches in Madhya Pradesh on Friday, affecting daily business worth around Rs 5,500 crore, a bank employees’ organisation said.
Madhya Pradesh Bank Employees Association chairman Mohankrishna Shukla told PTI that around 42,000 employees and officers from nearly 7,000 of the state’s 8,707 bank branches joined the strike.
Employees of 12 public sector banks, various regional rural banks and cooperative banks participated in the strike, he said.
Shukla said the strike affected cash deposits and withdrawals, cheque clearance, renewal of fixed deposit schemes, government treasury-related work and other financial activities at bank branches.
He said the strike affected daily business worth about Rs 5,500 crore in the state.
During the strike, bank employees staged protests across MP demanding immediate implementation of a five-day work week.
Their other demands include updating and improving pension benefits, a uniform system for calculating dearness allowance for all pensioners, and an option for employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS) to switch to the old pension scheme. PTI HWP LAL NR
